Background of the Study
Language standardization efforts aim to create uniform language norms that facilitate effective communication and literary production. In Kano, Hausa literary publications play a pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage and disseminating knowledge. Efforts to standardize Hausa in literature include developing a unified orthography, grammar, and vocabulary that all publishers and writers adhere to (Bello, 2023). These initiatives are often supported by both governmental policies and academic research, seeking to enhance the quality and credibility of literary works. Standardization is expected to improve consistency in published texts, making them more accessible to readers and preserving the language’s rich oral traditions. However, literary communities sometimes resist strict standardization due to concerns over stifling creative expression and the loss of dialectal variations. This study appraises the current language standardization efforts in Hausa literary publications in Kano by examining published works, stakeholder feedback, and policy documents, aiming to determine the effectiveness of these initiatives and suggest improvements (Umar, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite concerted efforts to standardize Hausa in literary publications, challenges persist in achieving uniformity across texts. Divergent dialects, publisher preferences, and resistance from creative writers contribute to inconsistencies that may dilute the intended benefits of standardization. This inconsistency can hinder reader comprehension and affect the cultural transmission of traditional narratives. The study seeks to evaluate these standardization challenges and their implications for Hausa literature in Kano, addressing the gap between policy initiatives and their practical implementation (Bello, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate current standardization practices in Hausa literary publications.

  • To identify challenges and inconsistencies in implementation.

  • To recommend strategies for achieving more uniform language standards.

Research Questions

  • What challenges impede effective standardization?

  • How can these challenges be overcome?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the efficacy of language standardization in Hausa literature, offering guidance for publishers, policymakers, and educators. The findings will contribute to improved literary quality and cultural preservation in Kano (Bello, 2023; Umar, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Hausa literary publications in Kano and does not extend to other forms of media or regions.
